I have had a real close look at this afternoons bumper race at Sedgefield the 5:25 race. The favourite Now Let Go has the best form in the book based on his first time out run at Wetherby when a well backed 2/1 fav finishing a close third. The winner has since ran creditably and the 2nd and 4th place horses have both won since. The 5th place horse in the race Carinena is well regarded by Nicky Richards therefore the favourite is a live danger today as you would expect at 7/4. That day at Wetherby I was having a close look at the runners in the pre parade ring and had a good look at Now Let Go. As is often the case the Crawfords had him turned out hard fit and ready to race. He did not particularly take my eye as a big improver and together with the fact he has not run for 104 days for some reason therefore we will take a chance and take him on today.
Paul Webber sends the well backed 2nd favourite Just A Feeling all the way up north with an eye catching jockey booking in Tom O’Brien who you would normally expect to be busy at Cheltenham today. This well bred mare may be a danger provided the Webber stable is over their cold spell which seems to have lasted a long time. NB they had a bumper winner in France a few days ago which is a good sign for the stable……we will see.
Libby Mae won well on soft ground and then got well beat by a nice type on good ground next time out. The good ground today may not be in her favour and as usual with the Hammond horses they do seem to run well and then not so well for no apparent reason far too often for my liking. A young jockey up top today and I suspect the more experienced jockeys will have a better finish in them today on this good ground.
The value in the betting for each way punters is the Kirby mare Soeur De Rois this well bred french mare by King’s Theatre posted a much improved effort last time out on good ground behind a Juddmonte flat bred horse Pomme. In this race Isla Fernandes was only 2 lengths ahead of our selection even though we were receiving 7 lbs that put’s us well in the game and at the current best price of 13/2 I think this improving mare can step up again and with the benefit of a run 21 days ago will be close to peak fitness. Kirby has a history of slowly bring his bumper horses on and it is quite normal for them to need their first run and then improve considerably very much like Bedale Lane did for us when winning on boxing day for us again at Sedgefield!
Taking everything into account Soeur De Rois is the value and an each way selection at 13/2.
POST RACE COMMENT: A 4th place finish two and a quarter lengths away from a place and a slightly disappointing run from the selection.
